Charlie N. Holmberg is a Utah born author who has a couple series and multiple stand-alone novels. I have chosen my top 5 favorites of her books to share with you guys, I hope that you find one you like!
5. The Paper Magician
The first book in The Paper Magician series, it's my favorite of the series. The series follows Ceony Twill during her magic apprenticeship with Magician Emery Thane. As Ceony learns paper magic and tries to complete her apprenticeship she is thrown in to the world of a dark, forbidden magic. This series is engaging and easy to read, it's the perfect book to sit down with and let it take you to another world.
4. The Plastic Magician
This book is actually a spin-off that takes place after The Paper Magician series. It tells the story of Alvie Brechenmacher, an apprentice Polymaker (plastic magician). Plastic magic is a new field, full of discovery and new inventions. Alvie works with her mentor to discover and invent the next big thing. While the book focuses on Alvie and her work as a plastic magician, we do get a peek at some of our favorite characters from The Paper Magician series. While this novel makes sense as a stand-alone, I suggest reading The Paper Magician series first. It gives some background to the story and the cameos from Paper Magician characters are fun and bring some extra closure to their character stories.
3. Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet
This is a fantastic book about Maire, a baker with a gift: she can infuse her baked goods with emotions that are passed on to the person who consumes the food. Maire doesn't know where this ability came from, as her memory only extends a few years into the past. Maire was found walking alone down a dusty road, with no recollection of her past or how she came to be there. When marauders raid her town, she is sold to a strange man who somehow knows of her abilities and may hold the key to her past. During this time, she begins to see a ghostly apparition of a man who claims that he is there to help her remember and possibly reclaim her past. This book is very engaging, I started listening to the audio book on my way home from work and ended up staying up late because I had to know how the mystery unfolded.
2. The Will And The Wilds
This is one of Holmberg's newest books, published January 2020. I watched for this book for months until it was released and finished it the day after it was made available on Kindle. The story follows Enna, a young woman who lives on the edge of the wildwood. The wildwood is home to mystings, creatures of magic that seem to wish only harm to humans. Enna keeps her distance from them, until one ventures outside of the wood to attempt to steal an enchanted stone that belongs to her. Enna must brave the wildwood and work with a dangerous mysting to protect her home and father. This book kept me interested til the very last page with all of its twists. Also, the cover art is gorgeous.
1. Followed By Frost
This is my absolute favorite book by Holmberg. I've read it so many times, I have parts of dialogue memorized. This novel follows Smitha, who is wealthy and popular, until she rejects a marriage proposal from a strange man. Smitha becomes cursed and frost begins to follow wherever she goes. Banished from town, Smitha wanders the woods, followed by Death, until she is approached by a man who may have a larger purpose for her to fulfill. Can Smitha overcome the pain and loneliness of her curse, or will Death take her? This book is the perfect mix of fantasy, magic, and romance. The character arcs in this book are amazing, but my favorite part of the book is the romance. It is so well-written, it feels like you're living it.
